By using flow cytometry, we studied CD103 and CD123 expression by the malignant cells in 300 B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder (BC-LPD) cases, including 114 hairy cell leukemia (HCL), 20 HCL variant (HCLv), 9 splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL; in 5, only CD103 was evaluated), 133 chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL), 3 follicular lymphoma (FL), and 21 mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). All HCLs expressed uniform CD103 and bright CD123. Among the 20 HCLv cases, 20 (100%) were CD103+ and 8 (40%) were CD123+ (partial or dim). CD103 was negative in all MCL, FL, CLL, and SMZL cases. CD123 was positive in 1 (25%) of 4 SMZL, 3.8% of CLL (5/133), 7 (33%) of 21 MCL, and 1 (33%) of 3 FL cases. CD103 is specific for HCL and HCLv. CD123 expression is more widespread in BC-LPDs but is useful in conjunction with CD25 to differentiate HCLv from HCL. These findings support the usefulness of CD123 and CD103 to aid in the differential diagnosis of BC-LPDs.

Hairy cell leukemia is a cancer of the blood and bone marrow. This rare type of leukemia gets worse slowly or does not get worse at all. The disease is called hairy cell leukemia because the leukemia cells look "hairy" when viewed under a microscope.

In hairy cell leukemia, too many blood stem cells become lymphocytes. These lymphocytes are abnormal and do not become healthy white blood cells. The abnormal lymphocytes are also called leukemia cells. The leukemia cells can build up in the blood and bone marrow so there is less room for healthy white blood cells, red blood cells, and platelets. This may cause infection, anemia, and easy bleeding. Some of the leukemia cells may collect in the spleen and cause it to swell.

Anything that increases your chance of getting a disease is called a risk factor. Having a risk factor does not mean that you will get cancer; not having risk factors doesn't mean that you will not get cancer. Talk with your doctor if you think you may be at risk. The cause of hairy cell leukemia is unknown. It occurs more often in men.

Different types of treatment are available for patients with hairy cell leukemia. Some treatments are standard (the currently used treatment), and some are being tested in clinical trials. A treatment clinical trial is a research study meant to help improve current treatments or obtain information on new treatments for patients with cancer. When clinical trials show that a new treatment is better than the standard treatment, the new treatment may become the standard treatment. Patients may want to think about taking part in a clinical trial. Some clinical trials are open only to patients who have not started treatment.

Chemotherapy is a cancer treatment that uses drugs to stop the growth of cancer cells, either by killing the cells or by stopping them from dividing. When chemotherapy is taken by mouth or injected into a vein or muscle, the drugs enter the bloodstream and can reach cancer cells throughout the body (systemic chemotherapy). The way the chemotherapy is given depends on the type and stage of the cancer being treated. Cladribine and pentostatin are anticancer drugs commonly used to treat hairy cell leukemia. These drugs may increase the risk of other types of cancer, especially Hodgkin lymphoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Long-term follow up for second cancers is very important.

This PDQ cancer information summary has current information about the treatment of hairy cell leukemia. It is meant to inform and help patients, families, and caregivers. It does not give formal guidelines or recommendations for making decisions about health care.

The hairy or hirsuta peanut not only has a natural defense againstinsect pests and is able to withstand temperature extremes better thanregular peanuts, but it also has a better flavor. David E. Williams, anethnobotanist, collected 25 peanut varieties from Puebla and Guanajuato,Mexico, 12 of which were hirsuta. Prior to that, there were only five hirsutavarieties in the US National Plant Germplasm Collection. US breeders have notused the varieties much because of a 6-month-long growing season, butresearchers hope to breed hairy peanuts with shorter growth cycles.

Plant breeders' attention has recently turned to the hairy,or hirsuta, peanut with its densely haired stems and leaves--a defense thatcould deter insect pests from feeding and laying eggs. And the hirsuta peanutis believed to tolerate heat and drought better than other peanuts.

But it was the reports of superior flavor that really sparkedinterest in using hairy peanuts to breed new, better flavored types for U.S.consumers, says David E. Williams, a plant explorer with the ARS NationalGermplasm Resources Laboratory in Beltsville, Maryland.

Today, hirsuta peanuts are once again regarded as avaluable--though scarce--commodity. While there are four recognized botanicalvarieties of cultivated peanuts, Williams notes that hairy peanuts are themost severely underrepresented in international germplasm collections.

His other objectives: To gather information about where hairypeanuts can be found, special farming techniques used to grow them, localuses and market value, and how best to conserve peanut genetic resources inthe places where they are growing.

"In Puebla, we were surprised to find previously unreportedvarieties of hairy peanuts that the natives roast and boil for local sale andconsumption. But these unique varieties are gradually being displaced byhigher yielding cultivars and are in real danger of becoming extinct,"he says. "In Guanajuato, only a single variety of hairy peanut is stillbeing cultivated." 041b061a72
